What We Treat Co-Occurring Conditions

Other factors that may impact your emotional well-being.

Our Primary Focus

During your treatment at Backcountry Wellness, our expert medical staff monitors and manages any health issues your eating disorder may be causing. However, there may be additional factors contributing to your emotional health outside of your eating disorder.

A Tricky Combination

Evidence reveals that if you have an eating disorder, it’s likely you are also experiencing co-occurring (or existing at the same time) difficulties in social, emotional or cognitive areas. Eating disorders are often coupled with anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or other co-occurring conditions.

Stats on Co-Occurrence

Below are some insightful statistics on the co-occurrence of eating disorders and mental health disorders, based on a nationally representative survey* conducted by scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH):

Overall Prevalence

  • More than half of people with anorexia met criteria for at least one mood/emotional disorder.
  • More than three-quarters of people with binge eating disorder met criteria for at least one mood/emotional disorder.
  • Ninety-five percent of people with bulimia met criteria for at least one mood/emotional disorder.

Anxiety

  • Anorexia co-occurred with an anxiety disorder in approximately half of cases.
  • Binge eating disorder co-occurred with an anxiety disorder in about sixty percent of cases.
  • Bulimia co-occurred with anxiety disorder in roughly three-quarters of cases.
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder was the most commonly diagnosed subtype of co-occurring anxiety disorder

Depression

  • Anorexia co-occurred with depression in roughly one-third of cases.
  • Bulimia co-occurred with depression in almost fifty percent of cases.
  • Binge eating disorder co-occurred with depression in roughly one-third of cases.
